On convocation, the Laboratory has adapted the basic concept of open door policy to accept and support worthy research projects with originality from external applicants, regardless of national and international sources, to be performed with the benefit of the excellent facilities and infrastructure provided by her. The Laboratory also established an affirmative policy of strong cooperation in complementary, interdisciplinary, and international modes. So far these collaborations includes institutions in some major Universities, such as Ecole Normale Supérieure (FRANCE),Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), University of Southampton (UK), California Institute of Technology (USA), University of Guelph (CANADA), Hokkaido University (JAPAN), Hebrew University (ISRAEL), Ulm University (GERMANY), Lille1 University (FRANCE), University of Jyväskylä (FINLAND), University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), and etc. The Laboratory has been invited as the partner to join, and to establish International Max Planck Research School for Surface and Interface Engineering in Advanced Materials. The Laboratory has set up an Associated International Laboratory (LIA) of Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), in order to promote scientific cooperation and exchange in the field of nanofabrication and micro-fluidic devices towards advanced innovative biophysical, biochemical and biomedical sciences. The Laboratory provided her facilities and hospitality to more than 50 visiting scientists annually through various mechanisms.
At the national level, the Laboratory has taken initiative in planning with many universities and research establishments for substantive exchanges and collaborations. In addition, over the years, mutually profitable joint research projects have been developed with many commercial and military concerns such as China Aviation Lithium Battery, Sinopec Group, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, in order to assist in solving specific technical items.

Since 1999, the Laboratory has held surface science meeting series on different themes every two years. And the Laboratory also held a regular bilateral Seminar with Hokkaido University, University of Southampton. These activities have introduced internationally the research capability and strength of the laboratory and lifted the Laboratory visibility in the national and international theaters.
